Liposuction is a body-contouring procedure that removes fat to recontour your figure and restore a more contoured or athletic appearance. Types of Liposuction
Our team can perform two different types of liposuction: tumescent and VASER. During your personal consultation, your surgeon will assess your concerns, your natural anatomy, and several other factors to determine which variation will be the most appropriate approach.
- Tumescent Liposuction: Tumescent liposuction is the gold standard of liposuction. During the procedure, your surgeon injects a tumescent fluid to swell fat cells, construct blood vessels, and numb tissues, then moves a cannula to break down your local fat before they suction it out. (2)
- VASER Liposuction: Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance (VASER) liposuction uses a cannula that emits ultrasound waves to liquefy your fat before aspirating it out of the body. They will plan specific details of your procedure, including what regions to address, how large an area to treat, and how much fat to remove. Preparation
After scheduling your procedure, you will need to prepare. Your surgeon will provide you with a set of written instructions that may direct you to:
- Avoid Certain Medications: Discontinue the consumption of any blood-thinning medications or supplements.
- Arrange Time Away: Make preparations to take time away from your career and your other personal commitments and responsibilities.
- Coordinate Transportation: Ask a trusted person close to you to drive you home after your procedure and, if needed, stay with you during the first few days of your recovery.
- Run Your Errands: Before undergoing your procedure, fill your prescriptions and turn your home into a comfortable recovery space.
- Cease Certain Substances: Refrain from consuming nicotine or alcohol leading up to your procedure, as both of these substances can lead to the development of complications.
Procedure
When you arrive for your procedure, a member of the myHoustonSurgeons team will lead you to a private room where your skin will be cleansed. You will then be transported to the operating room, where you will receive either general anesthesia or intravenous (IV) sedation.
Once you are comfortable, your surgeon will make a small incision near the targeted treatment area and inject the region with a tumescent solution composed of epinephrine, lidocaine, and saline. It will help minimize bleeding, further numb your tissue, and swell the fat for easier removal. (1) A thin tube called a cannula will then be inserted through the incision. Your surgeon will use this to gently break down the fat before aspirating it from the body. After removing fat and achieving your ideal contours, they will close incisions, and you will rest until being cleared to return home.
Recovery
After your procedure, you will need to give your body some time to recover. To help, your surgeon will provide you with a set of detailed post-operative instructions.
You can expect some initial swelling, bruising, and general discomfort. These effects will dissipate on their own, but you may also manage them using prescribed medications and plenty of rest. You may need to wear a compression garment during this time, which will limit further swelling and maintain the shape of your new contours as your tissues settle and heal.
You may return to your career and light activities after resting for approximately 1 to 2 weeks. However, you will need to wait several weeks more before resuming demanding or arduous activities. Your surgeon will also have you return for follow-up appointments to remove any drains or sutures, as well as monitor the progress of your recovery.
Results
You will be able to notice improvements in your figure immediately after your procedure, but the refined results will become more accentuated as your residual swelling further dissipates. Your exact results will vary, but you can expect to enjoy smoother, more even contours, enhanced proportions, and a more sculpted and alluring figure overall.
The results of liposuction are long-lasting, with effects that are generally permanent. This is because your fat cells cannot return after removal. However, the surrounding cells can still swell, making it crucial that you maintain a stable weight and healthy lifestyle.
