What to Expect During Your Breast Augmentation Surgery

Implant Options

Round saline: These breast implants are inflated after placement and have a thin silicone shell and are filled with saline. Saline implants are more prone to rippling and may feel less natural in patients with less body fat and breast tissue.

Shaped silicone: Shaped silicone breast implants come prefilled and like their round counterparts they are filled with a thick silicone material. However they are textured and have a teardrop shape and are filled with a denser silicone filling that is form stable. These implants can help achieve a more natural appearing augmentation in select patients who understand the unique risks associated with textured implants.

Preparing for Your Breast Augmentation Surgery

In preparing for breast augmentation surgery, it is important that you:
  • Take any medications prescribed to you and fill prescriptions for post-surgery care
  • Avoid taking aspirin and certain anti-inflammatory drugs as they can increase bleeding
  • Stop smoking six months prior to surgery
  • Arrange for transportation to and from our surgical center and care for at least 24 hours following your procedure

Breast Augmentation Recovery

It is normal when preparing for surgery to feel some anxiety, which is why the team at My Houston Surgeons will go out of their way to provide each patient with detailed information about each step of the process.

Breast augmentation surgery generally takes approximately one to two hours. Upon waking up, patients can expect to have surgical dressing covering their incisions, and wearing a post-surgical bra. This bra will need to be worn 24/7 for six weeks following surgery for optimal results. Some patients report tightness or achiness or in the breasts, but your surgeon will provide medication to alleviate this discomfort. There is no exact timeline for recovery after breast augmentation with implants as each woman’s body is unique. However, most patients see a full recovery and are able to resume normal activity in approximately six weeks, and many women feel ready to return to work after about a week.

My Houston Surgeons offers intraoperative nerve blocks performed with Exparel, an amazing long acting anesthetic, which reduces or eliminates the need for narcotic medication and mitigates any postoperative discomfort. We encourage patients to ease slowly back into light exercise and their normal daily routine, but refrain from strenuous activities such as heavy lifting, running or other rigorous workouts for the first 6 weeks

How do I know which size implants to choose?

Choosing the right breast implant size and shape is a key part of the process. The right breast implant size comes down to each patient’s unique cosmetic goals, body type, and existing natural breast tissue. Will an increase in cup size also add lift to my breasts?

Breast augmentation surgery is an effective way to add volume to the breasts, enhance the shape and correct asymmetry, but it is limited in how much lift it can provide to the breasts. For patients looking for moderate to dramatic lift, or to dramatically lift the placement of the nipple and areolar complex, breast augmentation alone may not be enough to elevate the nipple to the proper position. Patients with significantly sagging breast tissue, excess skin, or a lower than ideal nipple placement can consider undergoing a breast lift in addition to breast augmentation to address these common issues. The breast lift in addition to breast augmentation with implants can restore a more youthful overall appearance to the breasts, and is an optimal choice for patients undergoing a mommy makeover.

Will I have scarring after breast augmentation?

Using the most advanced surgical techniques, your surgeon will minimize scarring as much as possible and works to hide necessary scars by camouflaging them in the natural folds of the skin. Most patients report minimal scarring if it is visible at all, especially with incisions made around the areola or under the breast in the inframammary crease. What are the risks of breast augmentation?

While all surgical procedures carry some risk of complications and side effects, breast augmentation is considered safe for patients in generally good health and with realistic expectations.3 Possible complications with breast augmentation surgery include infection, bleeding, swelling, and changes in sensation.

Can I breastfeed after breast augmentation surgery?

Most women can still breastfeed after breast augmentation surgery, as the surgery and implant placement doesn’t involve the areas of the breast involved in milk production.4

How many followup appointments should I expect?

Followup appointments give patients the opportunity to voice any questions or concerns about the recovery process, and allow the surgeon to ensure positive healing and overall health. Patients can expect one followup appointment one week after the procedure, another at two weeks, then 6 weeks. Appointments continue up to a year after that every 3 months.
