Recently, bone contouring procedures for cosmetic purposes have gained popularity across the United States. Originating in South Korea where women were seeking a more slender face, this procedure can help contour a round shaped face into a what is commonly called a “melon seed” or “heart-shaped face.” Our board-certified surgeons are some of the few in America trained in these facial feminization procedures, which include forehead reduction and jaw contouring.
Our surgeons have unique training for these types of procedures, including our very own Dr. Rodman. She has extensive experience in craniomaxillofacial surgery which involves bone movements. Our facial plastic surgeons also have the aesthetic plastic surgery experience to give our patients the results they are hoping to achieve. This makes us some of the leading physicians in cosmetic bone contouring. Additionally, our offices are set up to take patients from start to finish through the entire procedure, from the initial CT scans to luxurious recovery suites.
Our surgeons specialize in a variety of facial feminization procedures, such as forehead reduction, jaw contouring, and chin surgery. With a forehead reduction, our aim is to reduce a prominent brow or forehead bossing. Jaw contouring contours the mandible and narrows a full jaw by reducing angles in the lower face. Genioplasty, or chin surgery, alters the shape and/or position of the chin. Our surgeons can combine the procedures or perform them on their own, depending on a patient’s desired aesthetic goals.
Benefits of Facial Feminization
The procedure can:
- Reduce the prominence of the jaw and forehead
- Give the face a slimmer, more contoured appearance
- Feminize the face
Before & After
There are a number of techniques we use to reduce a patient’s forehead. Our craniofacial and facial plastic surgeons, we are trained in both the contouring of bone, as well as soft tissue and scalp surgery. This allows for the most complete facial feminization.
In patients who feel they have a hairline that sits too high on the forehead, our surgeons make an incision at the hairline, loosen the scalp and bring it forward. In patients with a low eyebrow, our surgeons can also lift the forehead, making their eyes look slightly bigger and more refreshed. Most women have a hairline that sits around 5 centimeters above their eyebrows. This is why forehead surgery can help our patients see a more feminine and balanced appearance.
Some patients have a large bony prominence at their brow bone. Our surgeons can reduce the bone to give our patients a more feminine look. After lifting the forehead skin, our surgeons shave the brow bone or reset the bone. Both of these procedures can be performed at the same time. They can additionally be performed in conjunction with a hair transplant.
A prominent jaw can give patients a rugged and masculine appearance. Both men and women are great candidates for jaw contouring, if they feel they want a reduced jaw line. Jaw contouring surgery, otherwise known as V-line surgery, can be completed in a number of ways. This is why it is important to consult with your physician who can determine the best treatment plan for you and your goals.
After an initial consultation, our surgeons take a CT Scan of the patient’s jaw, to get a better idea of the shape and size of every bone, as well as how the teeth come together. During the procedure, our surgeons operate from inside of the mouth, leaving no visible outward scars after the procedure. Our surgeons carve the angle of the mandible and the back edge of the jaw with a drill.
A buccal lipectomy removes fat padding from the cheeks. This is an ideal procedure for patients with very prominent cheeks who desire a slimmer, more contoured face. This procedure can be performed on its own, or with any other procedures listed here.
In patients with thick jaw muscles and a wider angle, our surgeons resect some of the muscle that covers the angle of the jaw. This provides a narrower overall facial appearance. For patients who desire the look but do not wish to have surgery, Botox is another great option that can achieve a similar effect.
Quality Patient Care
Each patient has varying needs and aesthetic desires. This is why, during an initial consult, our surgeons will work with each individual to determine a treatment plan that will bring balance and harmony to a patient’s face. Furthermore, our surgeons along with the supporting staff at our practice provide full support and care for patients undergoing facial feminization right from their initial consultation stage through recovery.
